“VALUATION AND COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES”

Value Investing Brasil is pleased to announce its first Seminar, brought to fruition in a combined effort with the Centro de Estudos em Finanças of Fundação Getulio Vargas (GVCef).

The Seminar, to be taught by Michael van Biema (a funds of funds manager in New York), will have real-time translation and will be an adaptation of past seminars taught at Columbia University by Michael van Biema and Bruce Greenwald, co-authors of the book “Value Investing from Graham to Buffett and Beyond”.

The Seminar’s central topics will be: valuation in principle, valuation in practice, EPV (earnings power value), value investing, and competitive advantages.

 

ABOUT MICHAEL VAN BIEMA:

Michael van Biema is the founder of van Biema Value Partners, LLC, a funds of funds firm that invests in value managers of outstanding quality, worldwide.

Mr. van Biema was on the faculty of Columbia Business School from 1992 to 2004 where he has taught General Corporate Finance, Capital Markets, Securities Analysis, Value Investing and Entrepreneurial Finance in both the regular and executive MBA programs. He has also served as director of a research project into productivity in the service sector funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

He received his B.A. from Princeton University in Electrical Engineering and his Ph.D. from Columbia University. Before joining the faculty of Columbia Business School he was involved in several startup ventures and was a principal at the RONIN Development Corporation, a consulting concern specializing in strategic consulting to IT companies.

More recently, Mr. van Biema has consulted to companies such as: American General, Bell Atlantic, Brambles, CitiGroup, Deutsche Telekom, Gabelli Asset Management, Goldman Sachs, Merck, Salomon Brothers, and Vontobel Asset Management and several private asset management firms.

He is the author of numerous publications, including an article in the Harvard Business Review entitled “Managing Productivity in the Service Sector”, and co-author of the book “Value Investing from Graham to Buffett and Beyond”, has lectured internationally on value investing, and came to Brazil in 2008 and 2009 to participate in the Congresso Value Investing Brasil.
